Step A6: Report

delivery of impacts

The Report phase (A6) of the IUCN RHINO approach enables companies to quantify and communicate their contributions to species conservation and Nature Positive outcomes. It focuses on calculating Realised START scores — validated reductions in species extinction risk — and aligning these with national and global biodiversity targets.

Understand where your organisation interfaces with nature

A6.1. Quantifying impact on extinction risk
A6.2. Reporting contributions to national and global targets

Outcomes

  • Evaluation of corporate IUCN RHINO contributions to reporting and disclosure frameworks (for instance TNFD)
  • IUCN RHINO contributions to National Biodiversity Strategies and Action Plans, and to the KMGBF

A6.1. Quantifying impact on extinction risk

Companies measure the effectiveness of their conservation actions using Realised START units, which reflect actual reductions in threat intensity compared to baseline levels established during target-setting.

  • Realised START is calculated by reassessing threat levels using the same indices applied in the calibrated START score
  • It accounts for both prioritised and newly detected threats
  • These scores can be validated by external evaluators and aggregated across sites or portfolios to demonstrate corporate-level impact

A6.2. Reporting contributions to national and global targets

Companies should align their biodiversity impact reporting with national and international frameworks:

  • National Biodiversity Strategy and Action Plans (NBSAPs): Communicate results to relevant government agencies
  • Use tools like the WWF NBSAP Tracker to understand country-specific priorities
  • Future developments may include:
    • A registry of Realised START units to prevent double-counting
    • Integration with certification schemes (e.g., Verra, Gold Standard, ISO)
    • Alignment with the KMGBF species and ecosystem goals and SDG Goal 15

Outputs can be tailored for:

  • Corporate sustainability reports
  • Board-level briefings
  • Stakeholder communications
  • Government submissions
