A6.1. Quantifying impact on extinction risk
Companies measure the effectiveness of their conservation actions using Realised START units, which reflect actual reductions in threat intensity compared to baseline levels established during target-setting.
- Realised START is calculated by reassessing threat levels using the same indices applied in the calibrated START score
- It accounts for both prioritised and newly detected threats
- These scores can be validated by external evaluators and aggregated across sites or portfolios to demonstrate corporate-level impact
A6.2. Reporting contributions to national and global targets
Companies should align their biodiversity impact reporting with national and international frameworks:
- National Biodiversity Strategy and Action Plans (NBSAPs): Communicate results to relevant government agencies
- Use tools like the WWF NBSAP Tracker to understand country-specific priorities
- Future developments may include:
- A registry of Realised START units to prevent double-counting
- Integration with certification schemes (e.g., Verra, Gold Standard, ISO)
- Alignment with the KMGBF species and ecosystem goals and SDG Goal 15
Outputs can be tailored for:
- Corporate sustainability reports
- Board-level briefings
- Stakeholder communications
- Government submissions
